What is Eyelid Surgery?

Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid rejuvenation or eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic procedure that smooths, tightens, and lifts the upper or lower eyelids to correct sagging, puffiness, and other signs of aging. It involves trimming and repositioning excess skin, fat, or underlying muscle tissue. In addition to its cosmetic benefits, upper blepharoplasty can improve the field of vision for people with more advanced sagging above the eyes. Lower blepharoplasty usually focuses on reducing bags, smoothing out depressions, shortening an elongated eyelid, and lifting the lower lid while tightening the skin.

What is Lower Blepharoplasty?

Dr. White uses a combination of approaches to rejuvenate the lower eyelids. In patients with puffy eyelids but tight skin, the transconjunctival approach can be used to perform a scarless lower blepharoplasty procedure focused on smoothing the lower eyelid. In this minimally invasive surgery, a tiny incision along the inside edge of the lower eyelid allows the surgeon to remove herniated puffy fat that gives the eyelids a tired appearance. If the skin itself is wrinkled or loose, a pinch of skin can be removed safely with a well-hidden incision just under the eyelashes. Fatty deposits can be redistributed to simultaneously eliminate puffiness and fill in the groove-like depressions that can form in the tear trough. Fat can also be transferred from the abdomen and placed artistically in these under-eye grooves to restore volume and youthful curves. This helps your eye area look more awake, revitalized, and younger.

Benefits of Lower Blepharoplasty

Lower blepharoplasty offers many benefits that make it an excellent option for patients wanting to restore their under-eye area:

  • Reduces bags, fine lines, and wrinkles
  • Corrects sagging of the lower eyelid away from the eye
  • Fills in depressions in the tear troughs and removes dark circles
  • Revitalizes the eye area and entire face
  • Can be performed in a minimally invasive in-office procedure for upper eyelids
  • Can be combined with other procedures such as upper blepharoplasty, a brow lift, fat grafting, or a facelift
  • Results last from years to a lifetime

Am I a candidate for Lower Blepharoplasty?

Healthy adults wishing to correct under-eye puffiness, fine lines, tear trough depressions, or a lower eyelid that sags beneath the iris are good candidates for lower blepharoplasty. There is no right age to have lower blepharoplasty. If the contours, skin quality, and tone of your under-eye area are showing signs of aging, lower blepharoplasty can deliver a dramatic but natural-looking improvement. Before recommending any procedure, we will always take time to learn about your medical history and cosmetic goals to ensure that surgery can safely deliver the results you desire.

Lower Blepharoplasty Consultation and Preparation

At your pre-operative consultation, Dr. White will go over the steps of your procedure and provide instructions to help you prepare. Lower blepharoplasty is an outpatient procedure, meaning you can go home the same day. Because IV sedation or general anesthesia will be administered, you will need to arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home afterward. Our Miami lower blepharoplasty patients may also be instructed to avoid certain medications for a short time before surgery. We will do everything needed to prepare you so you are comfortable and confident when you arrive for your surgery.

Lower Blepharoplasty Procedure

Lower blepharoplasty is typically an outpatient procedure. You will be given either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia for your comfort and safety. The procedure takes about an hour unless you are combining it with upper blepharoplasty or other treatments, in which case surgery time could be longer. Often, it is only necessary to remove fat from the under-eye area. If this is the case, Dr. White removes the fat via a transconjunctival incision made on the inside of the lower eyelid, where it leaves no externally visible scar. The placement of your incisions and the details of your procedure will be determined by your unique needs and goals.

Lower Blepharoplasty Results, Recovery, and Aftercare

After a short period of monitoring, we will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions and release you to return home. We are always available to answer questions during your recovery and support you in any way we can to ensure prompt healing. You may be given topical ointment and oral medication, as well as tips for reducing post-procedure swelling and discomfort. Certain precautions are necessary during early recovery, such as limiting sun exposure and refraining from strenuous exercise. Soreness, swelling, and bruising are normal during the healing stage. Most people return to work after about one week to ten days, though complete healing will take longer. As post-procedure swelling subsides, you will be able to enjoy the smoothed and rejuvenated appearance of your eye area. Your results can last many years and may continue to provide enhancement for a lifetime.

Lower Blepharoplasty FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Yes. Blepharoplasty is one of the most highly sought-after surgical procedures for cosmetic rejuvenation of the face. Recently, plastic surgeons are seeing more younger patients who choose blepharoplasty to address loss of eyelid elasticity in the earlier stages and as a preventative treatment to slow down signs of aging.

General anesthesia or sedation is administered so our Miami lower blepharoplasty patients will not feel anything during the procedure. You will have some swelling, discomfort, and bruising during the early stages of healing, but these are typically well-managed with medication.

Like any surgery, lower blepharoplasty carries certain rare risks. Risks associated with lower blepharoplasty include a poor reaction to anesthesia, bleeding, numbness, unsatisfactory results, or infection. Choosing an experienced and reputable surgeon to perform your procedure can greatly reduce these risks.

Yes and no. After your procedure, the area under your eyes will still be susceptible to the changes that come with aging. However, your procedure will “reset the clock,” meaning that your eyes will always appear younger than they would have looked without surgery. Results from lower blepharoplasty can last for many years or be lifelong.

Because your procedure is tailored to your specific needs, the total cost can vary. At your initial consultation, Dr. White will present you with treatment options, at which time we can provide you with an accurate estimate for your lower blepharoplasty procedure.
